The Bulls were the first NBA franchise in Chicago, after the Packers-Zephyrs and the Stags. The team started playing in the 1966-67 season and had the best record by an expansion team in NBA history.
Before 1987, Florida did not have an NBA Francise. Several groups vied for the chance to establish a franchise, and The Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority eventually received financial backing from Carnival Cruise Lines founder Ted Arison to found Miami Heat. The Heat joined the NBA in the 1988-9 season, and had an unproductive first year, losing its first 17 games. They rose to prominence beginning in 1995, when Pat Riley became their coach, moving from the New York Knicks.
