The formula for this lemon-lime soft drink was created in 1929 by Leiper Grigg and since then the brand 7 UP has been reformulated several times. For example in 2006, the version of the product sold in the United States was reformulated so that it could be marketed as being ‘’100% natural”. This was achieved by eliminating some of the ingredients such as calcium disodium and replacing sodium citrate with potassium citrate to reduce the sodium content in the beverage.
